  Big Island Travel Information

Spanning over 4,000 square miles and twice as big as any other island in the Hawaiian Island chain, the Island of Hawaii is called the "Big Island" for a reason.  The island of Hawaii was created by the formation of the volcanoes Mauna Loa (the tallest volcano in the world at an elevation of 30,000 feet) and Kilauea, the most active volcano on earth.  Traveling to the Big Island of Hawaii will allow you to experience some of the most diverse micro-climates in the world.  From the beach, to the plains, to the great volcanic mountains, the diversity of climates and flora are amazing.  There is also much diversity in the towns of Hawaii.  Some towns such as Hilo are laid back while some of the resort areas of Kona are more traditional and Waimea and Waikoloa Village are more exclusive.  Whatever your taste, there is something for everyone to enjoy on the island of Hawaii.

Top Things To Do In The Big Island

The Big Island has two main tourists’ areas, Hilo and Kailua-Kona. The west coast is known as the Kona side and has been transformed into a lively beach town with traditional Hawaiian restaurants, and a fun nightlife. A nice beach for swimming and snorkeling when the waters are calm is Manini’owali Beach or Kealakeua Bay. The Manta Ray Night Snorkel is a popular attraction in Kona. Experience a Hawaiian Luau at one of the popular resorts. History buffs will enjoy the Kaloko Honokahau National Historical Park for those interested in Hawaiian history.  If you have time, be sure to take a trip up the Mauna Kea Summit to watch the sunrise.

Waimea and Waikoloa Village are on the east side of the island.  Enjoy a round of golf at the Mauna Kea Golf Course.  The Kauna’oa (Mauna Kea) Beach is off the beaten path with a restaurant and chairs. The Hapuna Beach State Park is the largest beach on the Big Island. Lava Lava Beach Club is the perfect spot to catch the sunset. Take a beach break and drive up to the Waipio & Pololu Valley’s.   Hilo is the island’s windward coast.  Some of the sights to drive to is Rainbow Falls, Lili’uokalani Park and Gardens, Richardson Black Sand Beach Park Onekahakaha Beach Park and the Akaka Waterfalls State Park. If you are interested in driving from North Kona along the Kohala coast, there are many cute beach towns and other private beaches that are fun to visit, especially during the hot days of summer.
